ABOUT MEL

I am a multi instrumentalist who can play saxophone, violin, piano,  guitar and bass. I’ve written alot of my own songs and sang in and led the punk / indie rock band ‘ Parafernalia,’ for several years, releasing our album ‘Weekend Anarchist’ in 2007.

I love music with a passion and have been making , taking part and teaching music for longer than I can remember.

My background has been a bit of everything, as I have played violin in orchestras, chamber groups , down a pit supporting an opera production to playing Saxophone in jazz clubs, boats, weddings, parties and night clubs across the world. My latest project is a gypsy, jazz, ska (gypskazz , a new genre!) called the Londinos aka Gypskazz.

We have performed at some prestigious events such as the Ealing Jazz Festival and at Trafalgar Square as part of the Paralympic games 2012. I have really enjoyed leading and managing this band as it makes  great music, is fun and has a really fresh sound!

I have also played music at peace camps such as Faslane Peace camp in Helensburgh, Soctland and at Aldermaston Womens peace camp. My most infamous occasion was at Norwood military base, where I performed ”Strangers in the night,’ round the camp at 2am! This was written about in the following months Peace News magazine. I have also been aka Bill Clinton on sax featured on  the infamous tune ‘ George Bush is an Islamic Fundamentalist .’

I studied Jazz at a Postgraduate level at Napier University in Edinburgh. My Saxophone teacher was Phil Bancroft. I also have completed a diploma in Saxophone and Music production and was taught by Dave O’Higgins.

On the Violin I have achieved my Grade 8 and went on to have lessons with Roger Coull leader of the Coull quartet.

I have played with and shared the stage with many amazing musicians such as Gregory Issacs, Sugar Minot, Dawn Penn,  The Beat, The Noisettes (originally Sonarfly), Mystery Jets, Editors, Musical Youth, John Sinclair, Fred Wesley and Gary Winters ( The James Brown Horn section).

I have also been the main saxophone player of the reggae band One JAH led by ‘I JAH MO,’ for over ten years. One Jah have performed at many great festivals in UK and regularly perform in Germany.

I currently perform as a solo saxophonist at Weddings, Parties, restaurants etc and gig with my band Gypskazz.  Go to www.gypskazz.com

I  am also working on a new saxophone album which includes new compositions.

Teaching

Saxophone ~Violin ~ Piano

I have many years experience teaching individual and small group instrumental lessons. I work mainly from home but can sometimes come to your house. I am also a qualified music teacher and have taught for many years as a music teacher in a special needs school. I have a friendly approach to teaching and work with the student to find out how they learn and what is the best way for them to reach their full potential. I teach using the classical method, as well as more modern methods, such as, songwriting , improvisation, Jazz and Jazz theory.
I believe it is right to learn how to read music as well as developing aural skills and the ability to be able to learn by ear.
