I noticed that everyone was saying “it is what it is,’ as answer to everything or as a footnote to a rant. I was interested in this phenomena and wanted to explore this in a song. The idea how a phrase can become steeped in to our community and how it shapes the thinking of our society.
The lyrics in the song talk about how “it is what it is,’ as a concept that cannot be reckoned with, you can only fight it, hide from it or resist it. Its there whether you like it or not. As the urban dictionary states, a phrase that states the obvious. The first few paragraphs in the song, make reference to the proverb and how it has evolved into our collective-consciousness.
The style of the song was influenced by Green Day, Foo Fighters and Nirvana to name but a few. I wanted to include feelings of angst plus a political reference to this era. To give a sense of empowerment for people to take back control of their lives. In world controlled by the powers that be, that we can reject autonomy.
I am a person! It is what it is.
